CMC’s founder, Mijnd Huijser, has developed the Model of Freedom (MoF). It is rooted in real-world experiences of professionals working in international organisations. Being tested with about 5,000 managers over a period of ten years, it has grown into a solid tool. The model enables us to draw profiles of vocational, organisational or national cultures. These profiles visualise why people act, perceive and interpret as they do. By comparing different profiles, we learn about similarities and differences in preferred management and working styles. It builds the basis for an effective reconciliation process between individuals, teams and organisations, where mutually beneficial solutions can arise. The Model of Freedom enables professionals to apply worldwide academic research on cultural diversity in a pragmatic way to their organisations and teams. The appreciation of other ways of management will add value to cross-cultural effectiveness.
The MoF contains four dimensions which are based on the family construct, the first team every individual takes part in. Being part of a family, or team, means we have to balance our individual rights with the duties in the community or team. The balance between uniqueness and being part of a group, ones individuality (or personal identity) and role (or social identity), is what Mijnd Huijser refers to as ‘cultural identity’. Depending on one’s culture, we have different preferences for what we feel are ‘normal’ limitations to our freedom of expression.
The figure below gives you an impression of its simplicity on the one hand, and its powerful potential to explain and reconcile cultural differences, on the other hand.
